Title: Origin Point

Emperor - September 25, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
Origin Point

Origin Point is a new game being created by me(well mostly anyway), and I've been working on it on and off for the past couple of months,. It's a 360 degree shooter, and is inspired partially by the metroid series.

Most of the graphics I've made myself, but the background in the second room is taken straight from Super Metroid..as..I'm no good at creating backgrounds. There is no sound yet.

The three room demo I'm about to post(look at the bottom of this post for it), is the Alpha 1. It has four weapons to choose from, 6 if you use cheatcodes, and a boss battle at the end. I know it's a short demo, but there will be updates in the future. The current story isn't enough for me to post, but once it develops, I'll post it here.

Video(The quality's a bit poor, but that's photobucket's fault)

---------------------

The controls are as follows

W A S D :Movement, press W to fly...
Left mouse button:Fire the selected weapon.
Scroll wheel OR E/F: Change the selected weapon.
Space:Go to the pause menu.

Press insert to enter a cheat code.
Current Codes:
emp_givehp : Gives 5 bars of hp.
emp_giveinvince: Invincibility.
emp_giveweapons: Unlocks the grenade launcher and laser rifle.

Use the scanner to gather information about your surroundings..

The map is selectable from the pause menu, but it's still in the beta, and none of the rooms there are actually in the demo.

I guess that's it, here's the download link.

Download this game. NAO.

Emp put a lot of work into this. It has an insane amount of potential, not to mention its fun as hell to play. Have I mentioned Emperor is one of the best GM programmers I have ever encountered? Yeah. Thank god I nabbed him for my team, lawl.

Anyways. I cant wait to see // play more.

Shrander - September 25, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
Really good game. ^.^
I can't wait to see more.

Kiroshima - September 25, 2007 04:29 AM (GMT)
This is a nifty demo. Weapon problem, flamethrower needs like an overheat, cause since it is infinite ammo, it pwns all at close range. Like, majorly pwns, at close ranges. Other than that, I think one of the laser beams in bottom right doesnt turn off, because there are 4 switches and 4 lasers, but only 3 lazers turned off after all 4 were destroyed. Also, why the weird, not flexible/fast/dextrous robot dude? I like jumping, and running fast =P.

Emperor - September 25, 2007 03:29 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the comments everyone, Kiroshima, I haven't been able to replicate the switches not working, are you sure you got all of them?

And, the flamethrower does need some sort of overheat..I'll add that in the next release. ^^;

As for the main character..well, I'm really not that great at spriting, and I know he needs a revamp. I'll try to make it look better.

Kiroshima - September 25, 2007 11:38 PM (GMT)
Eh, maybe i missed one, dunno. It isnt the robot dude's appearance, my question is why the robot. Kinda an odd main character, but as long as you develop a plot, it is fine with me. (Must have story!!!!)

GlassPirate - October 1, 2007 01:37 AM (GMT)
Well, the robot dude is kind of blocky and weak-looking, although don't get me wrong I'm not asking for some kind of mechagodzilla. But, I understand this is early, so it's not really that much of a concern, and it's your choice, after all. The coding/spriting and stuff looks amazing, and I can tell that you put a lot of work into it so far. Overall, I'll definitely play this. Good job! ^_^

DarkSamus - October 1, 2007 04:35 AM (GMT)
Dude that was fun as!

Emperor - October 25, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
Alright, I know I haven't posted here in a while, RL has been distracting and I haven't really gotten much done. But since I'll be home all this week because of the current wildfires, I have plenty of time to uh, update.

I've had a few maps done for a while, here's one of what the Outer Deck will hopefully be like -

Other things that I finished before include adding an overheat to the flamethrower, and integrating the map with the current rooms.

I'm also revamping the main character, it's almost done, except I need to add a running animation...and I have no idea where to start. The current sprite sheet stands at this -

I could also use level ideas if anyone wants to help out. ;)

GlassPirate - October 25, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
Yay! Progress! =D Lookin' good....

miles07 - November 21, 2007 08:10 PM (GMT)
Three things:
1) Shouldn't this be in the fangames section?
2) Looks a lot like Metroid...
3) WUB IT! MORE! MORE! [british]Please sir, I want some more![/british]

Shrander - November 22, 2007 01:04 AM (GMT)
1. It is his decision on where it is, it would fit in both sections.
2. Well, he isn't having it based off Metroid at all, only thing resembling it really is the map, but tons of games have map systems, but that type of map best fits the space/future type games.
3. I agree, except for the British thing, American for me ;).

miles07 - November 22, 2007 01:16 AM (GMT)
I was making fun of Oliver Twist, hence the [british][/british]

Emperor - November 25, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
Erk.. Sorry about the lack of updates, school's been a real time killer. I had most of this week off, but was busy with other things.

Anyway, I know you're all waiting for something, hopefully the demo will be ready in a month.
Oh, and if anyone wants to help out with the project(whether it's backgrounds, music, or just ideas) feel free to PM me.

Nice coverart! Perhaps you could "convert" the background from "real picture" to "pixel art" (or whatever art you made everything else with).

Gendreavus - December 28, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
I find it funny how you put the caption "Explore incredible environments!" with probably the least incredible environment screenshot ever.

Emperor - December 28, 2007 01:56 AM (GMT)
Lol. That's my fault for not having incredible environments yet. :P

It's still a little early for box art, but anyway, Origin Point has it's own site: http://originpoint.phazon.org. I'll be giving game updates there when..there's enough progress for one. XD

As for when the next demo will be released...it's still far off, though I've gotten a lot done from the last demo.

miles07 - December 28, 2007 05:48 AM (GMT)
Spare no expense on perfecting the engines and debugging the whole thing. Games go sour when there's no plotline, no control, and no point to the story.

Shrander - December 28, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
Yup, Emperor, here is an example: Metroid Prime: Hunters
No story line to hold interest in single player. Multi-player was horribly off balanced. The engine had huge loads of bugs that really weren't all that fun seeing as to how tons of them were multi-player bugs. Um, what else am I forgetting? Oh yeah, a ranking system that had people playing like idiots so their profile showed them as being "perfect players". /:

Emperor - February 6, 2008 03:16 AM (GMT)
Well.. Here's a month old bump, but the second Alpha is ready for release!
You can download it here. There are tons of new features (like the mini map, inventory and saving system), and new enemies too. The cheat system from the first Alpha is still in place.
Remember to check the site for updates, and register on the forum there if you want.

:P, he changed alot that day

Axion - February 9, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
Also guys, not to completely disregard the rules and advertise, but Origin Point does also have its own forum, so if you really want to be up to date on the progress of the game, that is the best place to go. You can get to it from the OP website (Clicky).

Emperor - April 1, 2008 09:24 PM (GMT)
I don't mean to be making a two month bump here, but I was really expecting...more responses towards the new demo. I know said before that school was eating up my time, which it is, but at the moment I'm really just working on the game by myself. It's also a bit hard to know what needs to fixing when so few people actually report anything about it. Anyway, I don't know when the next demo will be ready, but if anyone is interested about information regarding it you can drop by the forums.

Shrander - June 10, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
Emperor wanted me to post about apples for an announcement... so I shall say, key lime pie!
Anywho, project be alive again!

Emperor - June 10, 2008 01:35 AM (GMT)
Yes well.... The project is back, though some of you might be wondering what happened to the site. Phazon.org went down a couple of weeks ago, and with them, OP's site. For now, I've moved it to http://op.darkglassproductions.org until Axion gets Phazon.org back. I also removed the forum from the site since it wasn't be used. >_>

And comments and suggestions about the last demo are always appreciated.

Kuro-chan - June 10, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
I cannot seem to play it on my computer. It says the file is corrupted. :( Sorry.

Shrander - June 11, 2008 12:03 AM (GMT)
Do you use Vista? If so, you may need to use the Vista patcher file that is on MFM's site.

Kuro-chan - June 11, 2008 01:42 AM (GMT)
I have two comps: One uses XP and the other uses ME. Most of my graphics work is done on the ME.

Emperor - June 11, 2008 01:59 AM (GMT)
Is the zip file not working, or is it the game? I can re upload the file to the site for you (though the mirror on the first post might work) if it's the zip, but if it's the game..I don't know if I can do much unless you get a specific error. Oh, and, the game only works with DirectX 8+, so I don't think it'd run in ME.

StrafeHunter - June 11, 2008 06:59 PM (GMT)
Wow, awesome game :)
Can you teach me to make games like that? ^_^

Emperor - June 12, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
I'm not really sure if I'd be good as a teacher.. I use Game Maker to make it, if you're interested in using GM for development you could look up a few of the tutorials on yoyogames. Also, places like the Game Maker Community are good for more specific questions and tips.

StrafeHunter - June 12, 2008 02:02 AM (GMT)
Thanks

MetroidMaster1914 - June 13, 2008 08:16 AM (GMT)
Yay, site's back up! I was hoping that I wouldn't have to get rid of the dead affiliate link...

Shrander - June 13, 2008 11:28 PM (GMT)
Metroid nerds will probably need to be removed, not a single post in 4 or more months last I checked.

Come on, keep working on OP Emp, we need to see more!

Sylux125 - July 20, 2008 10:38 PM (GMT)
For the incredible environments why not have like a jungle or possibly a volcano?
