Title: Metricate
Description: Metroid like you probably haven't seen.
Trooper - March 24, 2008 11:38 PM (GMT)
So here's my pitch;
Some 2d Metroid game
PLUS a different camera angle
PLUS a witty, new name
MINUS jumping
(and all jumping-related upgrades, enimies, etc)
EQUALS...
Metricate.
One of Samus' various missions, with a top-viewed spin.
FEATURES:
- All new story!
- 100% custom sprites!
- New EXAMINING system!
- AND A NEW, INTERESTING STATUS BAR!
Hehe.
I'm not trying to sell you anything.
THAT would put me in danger of getting-sued-ness. ^-^
... Now, without the cheap salesperson-persona. I've been working on it for a little while now, and I'm well on my way to making a demo. So far, I've incorporated motion, firing the power beam, examining various objects, using a save station, opening doors, the missile upgrade, and a semi-interesting new status bar. There's only two small areas (and I mean small) at the moment.
I'm planning on having full-custom sounds and background music. I have one background tune on it now, that I made with some random program, and it seems to fit really well (and, since it's mp3, it has wicked quality). And a few sound effects.
It's being made on gamemaker, the lite version, so it has that annoying logo in the top-left corner when it loads. ><
Here's a few screens:
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk44/keough06/screen1.pngCaptive!
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk44/keough06/screen2.pngIn action!
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk44/keough06/screen3.pngSave station, and what's this? A missile count!
Once I get a few enemies programmed, I'll be looking for some place to upload my demo.
... So how's it look? ^-^

The sprites could be better--especially less saturated--but it's nice to see a new take on Metroid. I was actually planning on making a top-view Metroid game (probably a mouse-controlled shooter) pretty soon.
Shrander - March 25, 2008 07:00 AM (GMT)
To me, it looks like hgh conrast, higher detailed NES graphics, but it looks good, awesome to see more people out there still trying to make rhings for Metroid. Can't wait to see more progress.
XaviAce - March 25, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
This doesn't look all bad actually. Can't wait to see a release.
Trooper - March 26, 2008 12:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm no expert on sprites haha. But hopefully my programming-ness will show it up a little better.
And thanks for the comments, guys. ^-^
Couldn't put any work on it today, do to massive homework overload, etc. ><
I'll buckle down tomorrow haha.

I like the idea of a top down version of Metroid.
TDS games are actually one of my favorite styles, not to mention they are kind of a lost art in my opinion. Keep at it, I am curious to see more.
My opinion on the sprites and environment (and trust me, I know how to rig a good Metroid environment) would be to take some tile sheets and sprite sets from the style of Metroid game you are trying to capture (be it Fusion, Super, etc etc), and use the pallets and designs to fashion yourself top down versions.
DoctorM64 - March 26, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
Looks very promising.
The enviroments would be awesome if they are made with an "Alien Breed" style in mind. Man, that game was creepy.

Thanks!
As for da tile thing, I'm going to at least attempt to do EVERYTHING from scratch, first. But if I have a lot of trouble with that stuff, that sounds like it'll be real helpful.
And I can't say I've played this "Alien Breed"... what was it for?
Then again, I'll just google some screens ahah.
Oh, and I worked on a normal space pirate sprite today, and made the status bar look a little less boring. Space pirate sprite looks wicked', I think...
XaviAce - March 30, 2008 12:34 AM (GMT)
Can't say I know much about programming (A field of knowledge I've yet and wish to explore), But I can say that even from the screen shots, this is coming along pretty well. Though the sprites and environment have room for improvements, but even that wouldn't stop it from being a great game. May I ask what language you are writing this in?

Yeah haha
Lately I've been working on the basic space pirate sprite, and giving samus a more... samus look. I'll soon have enough space pirate movement and action sprites to start programming it.
THEN I'll throw in some other random enemy, and throw together a small demo.
I also shrank the custom-background-ness sounds down to size, by lowering the quality. It's a lot less clear, but it's done wonders for the file size.

Personally, I don't think it looks very good. Maybe if I knew a bit more of the story... At the very least, you have the guts to do a TDS-game, but you're doing it all from the ceiling. Sucks. If it were in a slanted perspective, like in, say, Zelda: A Link to the Past, or Mario & Luigi, then it would look a bit better in my opinion.
Still, the story background stuff is important for me. What's your game about? I wouldn't really download it unless it has a good storyline.

the plot is still being worked on
I know where I'm going with it, but it needs work
as for the rest of your post, sorry?
now, for anyone who doesn't mind my crappy, from-the-ceiling attempt at metroid, here's a pic of what it's looking like now... much easier on the eyes
and check out the new samus sprite

Hmm... Could do with some shading. I could help you out with that.

Gamemaker...? (that's weak)
Listen, despite everyone else's criticism (not to ripple any waves here) this game looks well. Now I will say that from, honest criticism, the game needs a lot of work. But other than that, it appears to be coming along pretty well. And I love the new Samus sprite, too. You are doing something that is pretty bold in my eyes. I've heard of many TDS games, and it's nice to play as Samus in a new perspective. Just be sure to give it a bit more work.
miles07 - April 1, 2008 04:46 AM (GMT)
I will, however, commend you on the HUD / Status Bar. Nicely crafted... Indeed!

yeah... not everyone has the time to learn c++ or whatever...
and it obviously needs a lot of work, because I just started it
but thank you for the sprite comment ^-^
and thanks for the status bar comment, miles
you should've seen the horrible carnation it was before it... it was even worse than the first
as for shading, I'll notfiy ya if I need help
miles07 - April 3, 2008 04:14 AM (GMT)
That would be incarnation, Troops. And yes, C++ is only a good program if you have the time to learn it or were born with all of knowledge of it implanted in your mind.

I lawled.
So, do you have an expected date for a demo? I really can't wait to play this, I think this is the first time I have seen somebody take Metroid into a TDS style.

xcuse me 4 speeling inkarnaytion rong, but yes, C++ ain't easy
and it all depends on how much trouble I have programming a few enimies, for the demo.
I'm still working on some sprite updates now, but I'm planning on starting to code a basic space pirate later today
studies are eating up my time faster than a cheetah in a slaughter house ><
miles07 - April 11, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
Or a dingo in a maternity ward, but we get the picture.
Well, good luck with that coding. It's the coding stuff that'll eat up a lot of time, not the music, not the sprites, not the storyline... not even the engine. The coding will make your brain explode and the rest of you turn into mush.
DeProgrammer - April 11, 2008 08:00 PM (GMT)
I would have a comparably easy time coding something like that. I can't wait 'til I get started on the similar project I mentioned earlier in this topic because of that. While I do love to program, I love it more when it's not insanely difficult, so something top-down would be easier, especially with no odd-angled motion (except bullets). :)
miles07 - April 12, 2008 03:39 AM (GMT)
Unless, that is, you can do a chibi-styled Samus so the "angled view" bit actually works accurately with the aiming/firing system.
But then again, that's just silly... Chibi-styled Samus... :P  Yeah right...
