Title: Metroid: Stick Figure Mission
Description: Screens and demo!
Got_Metroid??? - May 1, 2008 07:53 PM (GMT)
This is a game I've been working on for a while, I'm planning on making it pretty big, at least 3 times as big as it is now.
Story:
Samus lands on a space pirate frigate to investigate just what it is they're up to. Here's the demo:

just another mission!:

Oh yeah, there will be enemies, and lots of 'em:

And of course, puzzles!:

I haven't seen you in like...half a year, man. Where have you been?!
Ironically, I just got comments that my latest game isn't getting as much attention as I expected due to its pixelly graphics. I hope nobody dislikes your linearts. :P

Sorry man, I started a part-time job in December and that's been taking up a lot of my time. I was meaning to contact you but kept on forgetting, one of those "I'll do it next week" things.
Anyway, I took the March break off from work to go to a ski resort with my parents, I started this game up there since I didn't have internet.
I can't do Genesis I don't think, within the two years that I was working I made very little progress, I think It's a teamwork thing, I work best alone.

You need to make health pickups. That was one thing that made my game suffer.
Also, in the like, tenth room or so, when you have to jump the series of break blocks to get to the door at the top, the top row of blocks is very hard to jump across because the room is not high enough.
The legs on Samus and the Space Pirates need to have animations, and you need to use something other than 'X' blocks for the walls.
Other than that, I like it. I get that its supposed to be simple, but still, you could add some flare here and there (like more diverse tiles). But seriously, I didn't encounter any glitches, and the programing seems solid. You should definitely continue working on this game.
Although, I was wondering .. Why in the world would there be geemers and shreekbats on a space pirate frigate, roaming freely?
Got_Metroid??? - May 2, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
Hahaha, I was thinking of that while I was programming, my theory on this is there was a disturbance that let all of the creatures held in captivity in the space station free.
Animation is a constant comment, I've been trying to fix that. And I've fixed the problem of the breaking blocks.
Axion - May 2, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Cool cool.
And yeah, I was going to say, you could make the creatures experiment captives that were brought up from .. somewhere, like in Prime.

I finally got to playing it and I have to say I really liked it. A job well done.
The limitations and feeling of it reminded me of the NES Metroid game, which of course I totally love.
The puzzle system used for the Morph Ball was quite ingenious and original. Bonus points there.
Your first boss was also fun to play against. A good piece of work there too and nice touch with having to use the Morph Ball to beat it.
I would very interested in seeing more of this game, should an opportunity present itself. :) While I can go graphics and music and stuff, I used to do coding a long time ago... it's kinda lost to me now. :(

Thanks for all the cool comments.
I've been working on a new area:

Gendreavus - June 15, 2008 03:06 AM (GMT)
Erm...what does it mean if your graphics card can't handle a stick-figure game?
StrafeHunter - June 15, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
Same :(
And, the ship could be one of the other ships that escaped Zebes that are mentioned in prime.
Kuro-chan - June 16, 2008 06:08 PM (GMT)
PRETTY!
*Wants more! Wants more! Wants more!*
I noticed the missile system is in place there, but I am curious to what the time is supposed to represent?

I don't see how it couldn't, I am using a 64mb card with no pixel shader support, can't get much worse than that.
StrafeHunter - June 17, 2008 06:42 AM (GMT)
Yes, but the laptop I usually use is ancient :(
Shrander - June 17, 2008 04:35 PM (GMT)
If it came with XP, then it can't be far off.
And Got_Metroid, fun and decent game, can't wait for more progress.
DeProgrammer - June 17, 2008 05:19 PM (GMT)
The S-shaped room was really annoying. I'm overly used to stuff like that thanks to Maple Story and its Jump Quests. :P But really nice job on the boss. It's quite awesome.

What S-shaped room are you talking about exactly?
Anyway, thanks for the comments everyone. I wanted to release another demo soon but I'm having some problems with the elevator system I'm trying to implement.
DeProgrammer - June 18, 2008 07:47 AM (GMT)
This one!

I guess it's not really an S-shaped room. It's more a room with a S+c-shaped set of crumble blocks.

Oh. K. Well I'm not getting rid of it but I made it easier to get through at least.
DeProgrammer - June 18, 2008 08:56 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I figured if just the ceiling were a little higher and the entrance platform were a little longer it would be good.

Hmm... that's very strange that your graphics card can't handle it. But I think it might because I used registered Gamemaker functions like Alpha and Blend pretty heavily. I'm not going to do anything about it because that would require loads of programming. I hope you can get it working though.
Nice idea about it being one of the ships that escaped. I might use that idea. Oh, and if anybody has any other suggestions about enemies, bosses, items and the like, I'm open to suggestions. :)

Time is simply there for programming/testing purposes. It won't be there by the final version.
DeProgrammer - June 19, 2008 08:07 PM (GMT)
I'm going to pretend it's so that we can speed run it like DoctorM64's, except we can't skip items and there pretty much are none. :P
Also, would you like me to put this on my site, too?

Yeah I would like it on your site.
Lol speedrunning is kind of a reason for it too. My record is 5 minutes. :)

It is a good game. I liked it.
