No, I found it on Metroid Wiki. Apparently it's part of some "beta" concept art pack released in one of the non-E3 conventions that showcased Echoes. That's my best educated guess, at least.

I though the Ing were the opposite of the luminoth that came through when the planet split.

ACTUALLY the Ing are not Phazon creatures anymore. My theory is that the Emperor Ing was a Phaz-Ing that the Leviathan picked as a guardian but the Leviathan crashed onto Aether so fast that it created the Dark World and the Emperor Ing went from being a creature of Phazon into a creature of Darkness, then later created more Ing.

My theory was that the dark dimention was there all the time with the Ing in it but until the meteor crashed there was no way through, but when it did half of the energy was sucked through. When you recover all the energy Dark Aether didn't dissapear but all the portals closed as the energy unbalance was keeping them open. Well, this has to be my theory as I have a storyline that depends on this...

actually, i've already figured out the entire metroid storyline for everything. in metroid prime 2, the leviathan seed hit aether a long time before. the dark substance is simply a mutated mutagen of phazon, that had collided with the light energy of aether. the ing were never dark to begin with, they were a by-product of phaz-ing and dark energy.

i'm going to post an entire history of metroid later, so keep your eyes open.

Hmm, I had something like that but the objects that hit Tallon IV and Aether were not leviathans but bits of Phaaze that broke of unintentionally, the first carrying a mutated metroid with it, there is more story behind that with the creation of Phazon but I'll also post it later. My version has me in it! :D

there is. the emperor ing was the seed boss, it had fully grown from its weakling larval form. you know those leviathan cores you kill in mp3? those are baby emperor ings.
