(UPDATED):
Dread Engine v2Dread Engine v1Plans for Build v3:
*Critical Hit System
*New GFAI Deaths depending on weapon used.
*Third music layer to play on certain situations.
*GFAI to drop health and ammo.
*Possible new GFAI type.
-Dread Engine v3 Trailer-Update information (build v2):
Essentially the same as the previous post.
Bugs fixed, other additions:
*Weapons and Upgrades not being reset upon death.
*GFAI troops now have a smaller line of sight. They shoot twice as fast to make up for it though.
*GF Trooper bleeds open getting shot, to show damage is being taken.
*Heartbeat sound added when health is 25 or below.
*Automatic weapon reloading added. Holding down "Fire" for automatic weapons will reload automatically when you run out of ammo.
*Automatic weapon switch added. When you run totally out of ammo for a weapon and press "Fire", it will equip the Stun Stick.
*Weapon scrolling mod implemented. Press "fire" to change weapon (when new weapon is in the icon) to switch. Used to be right Mouse. Key now free for possible secondary firing modes.
*Fixed puffer glitch where damage wouldn't be dealt unless you were standing still.
*Double Jump modified, easier to pull off.
*Slightly changed bullet rotation for Jackhammer shots.
*Added new main menu buttons.
* Note: I'm aware a portion of the floor is invisible in Version 2 of the engine. Mainly this is because of invisible collision boundaries and a plan for expanding the demo room. at the time tile graphics weren't really a concern, this part will be cleaned up in the next release.Screenshots:

Woo, it's back. The Demo's great, as always.
EDIT: Glitches that I noticed.
-You probably already know about this one, but the buttons don't fade with the rest of the screen when going to the controls and starting the game.
-When you exit to the main menu with the shield pack (and presumably the double jump, haven't tested it...) and then start again, you still have it.
-The stun stick's glow is off when it finishes its attacking animation when facing right.
Minor stuff here, but you might want to know about it anyway. :P
-You can sometimes get negative energy when you die.
-When you reload with any gun at an angle, the reloading arm doesn't rotate.
-Sometimes when you die your gibs get stuck in walls.
-Dunno if this is intentional, but the puffer things don't hurt you if you just touch them.
-If you die when firing the rapid fire machine gun thing (the one that fires purple shots) the shots will freeze in mid air.
Also, right clicking with the stun stick at GFed AI's is win.

-You probably already know about this one, but the buttons don't fade with the rest of the screen when going to the controls and starting the game. Yeah, we just need new stuff on the menu. -When you exit to the main menu with the shield pack (and presumably the double jump, haven't tested it...) and then start again, you still have it. Applies with weapons and ammo also, something that does need to be fixed >_< -The stun stick's glow is off when it finishes its attacking animation when facing right. *shrugs*
Minor stuff here, but you might want to know about it anyway. :P -You can sometimes get negative energy when you die. That was on purpose, it's fun to go below 0. :P -When you reload with any gun at an angle, the reloading arm doesn't rotate. Yeah... -Sometimes when you die your gibs get stuck in walls. Woo! I beat the game! *Friend blows up, his leg stabs you* Ahrhrggrgrhr... -Dunno if this is intentional, but the puffer things don't hurt you if you just touch them. Looked at it more, if you stand there and they hit you, you take quite a bit of damage, but if you are moving when you touch them, no damage O.o -If you die when firing the rapid fire machine gun thing (the one that fires purple shots) the shots will freeze in mid air. Happens with all ammo I think. |

For some reason this game freaks out on my computer.
But, this is a different version so. . . . .

* Shrander is currently working on replacing the buttons. This will also fix the "no-fade buttons" glitch.

Tht is so freakin cool! Problably the coolest fangame ive ever see.
MetroidMaster1914 - January 17, 2009 10:53 PM (GMT)
This is a great demo. How far off is the actually game?
Shrander - January 17, 2009 11:14 PM (GMT)
Full length game not in the list of to-do anymore.
Sticking to just the survival stuff, maybe have minimissions.
But a full game will be too much, motivation dies fast when there is so much work to be done, placing tiles alone is a pain.
shadow metroid - February 5, 2009 02:18 AM (GMT)
This game reminds me of a 2D dead space but less creepier, taking place in the metroid universe, and obviously 2D. I played the demos, this game seems promising. Although I think the burst shot gun should have more "oomph" if you know what I mean.
kenji imatake - February 13, 2009 12:54 AM (GMT)
ah, very nice. I notice you are missing proper turning sprites which is.... here!

I know you already have the rest of the rips (with some extra) but It was just there in the tiles... (note- I only saw the trailer, not the demo. if you already have them... good =P)

Shrander - March 11, 2009 12:41 AM (GMT)
Come on people, no a single reply?
Seemed like a large improvement to me. :D
What do you have planned in V3, and when do you plan to release the next Dread?
And will you ever nag me enough to work on CG.net more often to help show this off? :P
StrafeHunter - March 11, 2009 07:30 PM (GMT)
Yes, whats the song for the video?
Axion - March 13, 2009 08:21 AM (GMT)
And ... why again isn't this pinned? *Pin* Feel free to turn this into your official Dread topic, or unpin it if you don't want it up here >.>
Anyways, amazing. The melee attack is just absolute glee.
I love it, the engine is very smooth. It took a while to get used to mouse aiming in a side scroller, considering I am used to that only in an FPS .. but after a minute it felt pretty natural. All the guns are sweet. I love the use of HL2 sounds, makes it that much more awesome. Weapon switching via mouse scroll is also very nice, especially with the wide assortment of them at your disposal.
There are only a few things that I can critique, because most of it is amazing.
First off, sometimes when pressing jump, the player does not jump. I have noticed this usually happens when running down slopes. Another thing is, maybe make the game window a little bit bigger? Or have to option to resize? Also, it would be interesting to see how the weapons could be balanced by having certain ones cause damage to the player if used in close proximity (rocket launcher, electric gun thing).
Other than that, very awesome indeed, the ice beam rail gun thing is sweet.
Also ..

So .. You know, some people LOOOOOOVVVEEE making levels, placing tiles, etc etc. And since you guys don't have a full game planned, with more of mini missions in mind, I would love to build levels for you guys. I mean, its just that is one of my favorite things to do ..
When you guys gonna get your site back up so we can affiliate? Lol!

THIS IS SO AWESOME! only thing i dislike is the fact that even for a demo, it's pretty small...
kenji imatake - March 18, 2009 08:19 PM (GMT)
@axion: that is one of my favorite parts too! you should see my demo when octohunter gives me the codes for boostball and missile bombs... it's well designed.

It's an engine for you to run around and see how stuff is put together. A demo would have some kind of scoring system included I would think. :P
fly_boy42 - March 19, 2009 02:57 AM (GMT)
I just played it with a touch screen, It was awesome
V2, was pretty similar to v1 except the floor disappeared at the very right
HistoryEater - March 19, 2009 01:28 PM (GMT)
touch screen? did you play it on your DS or something?
fly_boy42 - March 19, 2009 02:20 PM (GMT)
That's just racist, computers can have touch screens too you know.
How do you think I draw all this stuff?
HistoryEater - March 19, 2009 02:42 PM (GMT)
Computers have touchsreens????
i thought PDA's, Palms, and Ds's were the only things with touchscreens. and register screens. man, i'm seperated from the world.....
fly_boy42 - March 19, 2009 07:02 PM (GMT)
Everything has touch screens these days, even your eyes can be touched for special features. would you believe gendy has meat vision?
(Tablet PCs, Look it up, it's what most web comicateers use)
Dragon - March 29, 2009 08:19 PM (GMT)
@Axion:
That's pretty cool, though I'm using MMF2 and I'm not so sure if you'd like the level design interface it uses. If you aren't busy then hey, we can use some inspiration for level design. ^_^
@ Fly_Boy:
Dread on a touchscreen? I'd like to see that, it'd be awesome if you could upload a video of that if you can.
@History:
Thanks! I'm aware the demo room is small, but expect larger rooms in later builds. This is only an engine test, but I may expand the level to make it a little more interesting.

Plan on adding Shield GFAI and Resonator GFAI to the game. Just recently made it so some enemies drop ammo and health when killed as well.
Communist Shark - April 26, 2009 04:09 AM (GMT)
-DREAD DEMO IS VERY LOUD. Maybe add a volume adjuster? (You know this because I was voice-chatting you and you heard it :P)
Also, maybe change controls to options, make the gore thing in there, and make the controls button in there too? Just sayin. :P
-The blood and effects are amazing.
-Anyway to make your game detect if the window is active? If so, please make it pause the game whenever it's not active.
But yeah, keep it up. I'd really like to see this evolve into a game and stop just being engine upgrades. :P
If you need any help with maps, I'll help you. Just ask. :)
Android-Music - July 2, 2009 01:20 AM (GMT)
Played the "Dread Engine" couple days ago - dang I like it! :) Finally something original, one of rare "not about Samus" games! I'm also working on a fan game(I hope it'll be possible to add a topic here soon) and I imagine how much effort you put in this engine. Great job! :)
Orkpower - July 2, 2009 06:32 PM (GMT)
Wow, that was great. I just wish it had perpetually spawning enemies, and then I'd kill most of my time playing this...Lots of fun. Maybe give us the option for respawning enemies in the next one? That'd be lots of fun...*Starry eyed*
milescart - October 3, 2009 05:17 PM (GMT)
what are all the weapons in this game and what do they look like (i can't get it to work)
