Title: NES Samus reborn
Description: Samus NES sprite upgraded!
ProtoTroid Gamma - January 14, 2009 08:20 PM (GMT)
Okay, first things first.
One: The sprite was made from scratch (except for the colors).
Two: It was based on the Metroid Zero Mission beta sprite.
Three: Animation is in development. . . . What?
Four: I can't say it's great, but I tried.
It has the normal turned to the screen pose, and facing right pose. One with different, more sensible colors is on the far right.
Anyway, it is a re-creation of the NES Samus.
Tell me what you think (Note: The visor will not be changed unless given a different stlye).
Miles07 - January 14, 2009 09:19 PM (GMT)
Very boxy... maybe overly so. But I think the jetpack (side-view) is too noticeable, since at first glance it looks like an arm to me.
fly_boy42 - January 15, 2009 02:12 AM (GMT)
too small too boxy too colorful.
Miles07 - January 15, 2009 05:37 AM (GMT)
Yes, the third sprite has too many colors: You only EVER in an NES-style sprite should have 4 colors, one of them HAS to be black.
ProtoTroid Gamma - January 15, 2009 11:17 PM (GMT)
Update:
#1: Gray removed and replaced with black. There are now only four colors.
#2: Made a little less "boxy."
#3: Alternate palette removed.
And too small? It's as tall as Zero Mission Samus.
fly_boy42 - January 15, 2009 11:34 PM (GMT)
the lack of grey makes it easier on the eyes.
I don't know why.
Gray is spelled with an a
Miles07 - January 16, 2009 01:00 AM (GMT)
Depends on which country you're from.
And make sure it fits the sprite box sizes common in an NES sprite. (16x16 tiles, 2 tiles for Samus)
ProtoTroid Gamma - January 16, 2009 07:46 PM (GMT)
. . .
Are you saying I should make it shorter?
When I said I was remaking the sprite, I mean I'm going to make more fitting with recent sprites, but still making it feel like a NES sprite.
But, I'll see if I like it smaller, or if anyone else likes it that way.
StrafeHunter - January 16, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
I'm actually not sure how I usually spell grey or gray... I think I spell it grey...
Miles07 - January 16, 2009 08:06 PM (GMT)
Well, just compare it to the original Samus sprites. Then you can choose what direction you want to go with it.
ProtoTroid Gamma - January 22, 2009 01:48 PM (GMT)
well, I guess I'll just keep as tall as it is now.
Also, I have a walk cycle done, now I just need to make the arm cycle.
Kuro-chan - January 22, 2009 09:22 PM (GMT)
Reminds me a bit of this design:

I believe the original Samus was... what? 32 pixels tall?
*checks my lego statue of Samus*
Yup. 32 pixels tall. Three colors and one transparent which ended up looking like black since the backgrounds in M1 were all black.

I think they look fine, better than i would do, but then again, my first sprite looked like a blob.

lol
Anyway, the arm cycle is still messy. I'll edit this post with an update later.

Hehe. Thanks, Miles.
As for the format, just go with what you want for size, but don't forget to be consistent. Stick with what you want to do and it should work out well in the long run.
