Title: Handheld Homebrew
Description: Games, applications, etc.

So I've spent the last week or so playing around on Google, finding all the Nintendo DS homebrew I could so I could put it on my new CycloDS Evolution. I downloaded few things, and kept even fewer, and these are the ones that remain:

Lemmings DS. Absolutely awesome Lemmings game, complete. And it's open-source!
Still Alive. Really cool 2D version of Portal, complete.
TetAttDS. Pretty nice Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon/Puzzle League game.

Beup Live. A working Windows Live Messenger client for the DS.
DSOrganize. All-around pretty useful thingy, web browser included.
Moonshell 2. Same deal, minus the web browser.
nesDS. Good NES emulator. The best of the DS ones I've tested so far, but the GBA ones are better. Also, it's kinda hard to find this one... This is the version made for Moonshell 2.

For those with a EZ Flash 3in1 or other SLOT-2 card, you can use GBA ExpLoader to play GBA ROMs. There's a version specifically for Moonshell 2 also.

And StarLite would have been awesome had it actually gone anywhere. Whyyy do great teams do stupid things like use Blizzard stuff, when you know Blizzard is the most Cease-And-Desist-ing company out there? They should have just made a new RTS with the same basics and snuck in a StarCraft mod for it... :P

But I only have one working screen--the bottom one--on my NDS phat, so I'm not sure about some others I have, such as Video Games Hero.

So... anyone know of any other good Nintendo DS or GBA homebrew?

Also, if you have questions on how to set up some of the stuff in the above list, I can possibly help.

Edit: Heeyyyy, I forgot Orn for the GBA. It's a partial Metroid clone.

I remember Orn. I think some guy made it for his school final project or something. I recall finding an official website with a lot of artwork and a few other things. Anyway, the DS has quite a bit of homebrew applications, though I haven't used my R4 in a while.

Although according to http://forums.metroidheadquarters.com/index.php?showtopic=3,

"Absolutely DO NOT post any links or references to any illegal program, site, or service. This includes but is not limited to ROMs and emulators, ........"

I know I'm not a mod or an admin, but since nothing posted was illegal, (with homebrew being legally developed programs, and emulators being shady, but not necissarily illegal) nothing wrong was done, right?

Of course since I haven't been here in ages, I don't really know how other people see these issues.

From what I understand, homebrew is not necessarily legal or illegal.
However, I don't think MHQ could get sued or anything for it, so it shouldn't matter.

I myself like to use my newly bought PSP for homebrew and emulation. It's amazing that it can emulate PS1 games. Plus I can play Super Metroid on it!

Silly MetroidMaster1914, emulators are not illegal, nor are ROMs. Emulators are very handy for debugging homebrew software, and without ROMs, there would be no software at all! I will not be posting links to any ROMs that are illegal to download, but I'm certainly going to post links to homebrew ROMs. :P

Yeah, the dude made Orn for a school project. I have to say I like the graphics...

Here are a few games that are downloaded fairly frequently and that sound good... Geo Wars sounded good, but I'm thinking it might actually be a stolen commercial DS game called Geometry Wars.

Zelda DS
Warcraft Tower Defense
Legion
OpenTTD

it's not.

Warcraft Tower Defense

That game is awesome. It's well worth the download onto your DS.

Then I guess I'd better get Geo Wars, since it's commercial quality!

In the mean time, let's see what kind of NDS development literature I can find...

From my experience, after you get it through it's really annoying setup it's actually very good.
Although I tend to not use it because I cannot get used to the hardware limitations imposed by the custom libs.

DeProgrammer - June 23, 2009 04:48 PM (GMT)
Hardware limitations are imposed by hardware, not by libraries.

Yeah, I already downloaded devkitPro and PAlib and whatnot, and I've successfully made a program from scratch (well, I stole a makefile :P) that has a scrolling background, rotating animated sprite, numerous static sprites that run an explosion animation on command, music, sound... Yeah, PAlib makes life easy.

Hardware limitations are imposed by hardware, not by libraries.

They are imposed by libraries when the libraries aren't first-party and can't take full advantage of the hardware. That's why we've never seen anything coming close to the graphics of Mario Kart being made by homebrewers.

DeProgrammer - June 24, 2009 03:09 AM (GMT)
That's what you call a software limitation!

You aren't forced to use all of PAlib's stuff even if you use some of it. Heck, half of the library is just macros.

Edit: So, my secret project is coming along nicely...
