Title: Space Pirates?
SA.09.21 - June 2, 2006 03:57 PM (GMT)
Why aren't any Space Pirates in the game?

I have a pic of what a space pirate would be like in the first metroid:
Gendreavus - June 3, 2006 02:26 AM (GMT)
I actually wondered that for a long time myself. It seems weird how their first appearance was in Super Metroid, and had nothing but Kraid, Ridley, and the Mother Brain to represent themselves with.

Well I guess its due to the fact that most NES games don't have high-quality/detail storylines. Most where pretty much just plug in and play plumber saving a princess kind of a deal. Another possibility was just that they where maybe creating games to get on the market while it was still hot.
Hyper_Shock12 - June 3, 2006 03:18 PM (GMT)
or the martians and me came down and ate the cartridge they were using, that had pirates on it, and the hadn't backed up the pirates!

i heard in this metroid site that it was because the people from metroid wanted to take it as a surprise for A later metroid version! site: www.metroidforums.com
miles07 - June 5, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
Oh well. We'll probably never know... But we do know that Space Pirates are now a staple in the Metroid series... the Prime subseries, esp.
Kraid 2 cool - June 8, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
Doesn't it stand in the manual about the evil space pirates?
Gendreavus - June 10, 2006 03:33 AM (GMT)
Yeah, that's what makes us curious. It mentions the Space Pirates all over the place in the manual, but the closest thing we get to seeing them in-game is Kraid, Ridley, and Mother Brain.

HEY YOU ARE RIGHT!! IT SAYS HOW THE PIRATES STOLE THE METROIDS!!! dudes i think i know why nintendo never aded the pirates: they came up with the story but they never really thought of placing them in there......they must have forgotten!! and then in metroid 3 they remembered!!! thats why you see them more and mo...........omg dudes i think thats why they made metroid zero mission, i mean you just cant say that they made M1 again just cause of better graphics cuz then they would have made metroid 2 and metroid3 well maybe not 3 but i think thats why they remade m1 and then added the extra level CHOZODIA!!! Dudes lets just hope im not wrong cuz then id look really stupid if i was. Tell me do you guys think this cause i kinda do....
Anubis - June 11, 2006 01:15 AM (GMT)
I think maybe the story line was made later than the game was. As for the remake theory, makes sense.
Rewrite - June 11, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
Thank you anubis for agreeing with me. Cause I mean it DOES make sense i mean a remake of one game usually has some new features but not this different! like MZM how a new level another final boss and another escape??!! why didnt they remake metroid2!(i mean i know they probably remade M1 cause of this theory but i still think they should have remade metroid 2........THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!)
Anubis - June 11, 2006 04:38 PM (GMT)
Well no problem, I guess they where satisfied how M2 came out. Maybe it was much more true to the story line.
Rewrite - June 11, 2006 04:51 PM (GMT)
yeah but metroid 2's graphics kinda suck, and samus's movement is like funny and then there is no map, barely a pause, and then its hard to maneuver yourself.
So pretty much if they did remake M1 i think they should have remade 2!(.......OURAGE I SAY)
EDIT: Ummm metroid 2 was never really part of the storyline it was just killing metroids......
Gendreavus - June 13, 2006 01:08 AM (GMT)
Metroid 2's storyline was that the Galactic Federation had sent troops to the planet SR-388 to exterminate the Metroids, but they all died, so they were all like "noooooo! Samus! j00 gotsta do it fors us again!!!111!11eleven!" So she went to SR-388 and kicked butt again. The end.
Or something like that.

The G-Feds never sent a troop to SR388 Pre-Fusion.
Samus's_Sex_Hostage - December 28, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I read in comics that all the aliens on metroid are pirates. :metroid:

*hump-de-bump*
And no, the Zoomers and the Skrees are NOT Pirates. The Space Pirates first appeared in Super Metroid, which is really strange, since they've been mentioned since game 1.
PhazonBall - July 21, 2008 10:09 PM (GMT)
I wonder what the Space Pirates WOULD look like in Metroid.

oops, bumped topic...
i agree with the dude who looks like Bean the Sniper about how they were in game one's manual...maybe because the pirates werent in the actual caverns? just Mother Brain was? but that doesnt explain why Kraid was there...
Kuro-chan - February 5, 2009 08:15 PM (GMT)
According to the Metroid 2 instruction manual, first the Galactic Federation team sent an investigation team to SR388 to verify if they were still Metroids around, and were never heard from again. Their next team consisted of Federation marines, and they too were never heard from again after their initial landing. Finally the Federation sent Samus to SR388 to deal with the Metroid threat.
Metroid 2 is one of the very rare games that does not feature Space Pirates.
Also, don't Kraid and Ridley count as Space Pirates? If so, then Space Pirates did first appear in Metroid 1 as bosses.
ProtoTroid Gamma - February 6, 2009 01:56 PM (GMT)
Wait, wait, wait!
Lets all stop to think.
I noticed in the metroid manual, there were these. . . . . One eyed generic aliens in a picture or two, right AFTER the pirates were mentioned. Could those possibly be the space pirates? Possible yes, but what throws me off that theory is that in the first part, if you look at the aliens that had created the federation, one of those green things are there. Federation soldier, or Space Pirate? Hard to figure it out actually.
HistoryEater - February 6, 2009 02:11 PM (GMT)
lemme find out...
http://mdb.classicgaming.gamespy.com/m1/m1art_story.jpgthere. in the top right corner, the monster in the background MIGHT be a space pirate. (and definitely a weird one.)
Adorios The Metalloid Assasin - February 6, 2009 03:47 PM (GMT)
I was JUST about to post that.
yes, i think that might be a space pirate.
(and how old is this topic anyway?)
Axion - February 6, 2009 06:24 PM (GMT)
I never really took the time to read that manual till now.
Strange, that they never really picture the Space Pirates, let alone put them in the actual game.
Also .. I noticed something. Where it is talking about the Metroid in a state of suspended animation .. what is that cube looking thing with the yellow and green capsule? That certainly doesn't look like a Metroid to me. The Metroids are down at the bottom of the page, and even they look a bit .. off.
Actually, if you look through all of the manual artwork and such, the 'Metroid' (as they don't ever seem to use the plural Metroids) has tentacles, instead of pinchers or fangs. And it has three on each side, instead of two. Very strange indeed. Obviously by looking at actual game sprites, we can see that their design was changed to have the 'fangs' we know today.
Kraid also looks like he has hair. Green hair on his back, and a furry brown body. Would make for a good plushie, just watch out for the spikes.
And Ridley has, what, five eyes and an elephant like snout? Wtf?
So I don't think we can really go by the artwork in the manual. After carefully looking through all of it I can say in my personal opinion, that there is not one glimpse of an actual Space Pirate, as far as what we define Space Pirates by.
I mean, what if originally Nintendo meant for the Space Pirates to just be a rag tag band of bad aliens? Mother Brain, Kraid, Ridley .. And whatever other creatures decided (or were 'persuaded') they liked Brain's evil plans? Makes plenty of sense. Of course it evolved into there being an actual 'Space Pirate' species in Super Metroid. I know however that when I first played Super I was surprised to learn that those slow, beam shooting giant lobsters were the Pirates themselves.
However, now, in the Prime games, we can see that Pirates are definitely more evolved, have a more complex society, and are far more dangerous than their pixelated 2d counterparts (or lack of, in Metroid I & II). You can see where one game developer leaves off and where another one picks up in the series.
Also, who knows? Maybe they really didn't have any idea what kind of story they were going to end up creating. They had no idea if Metroid would bomb and that would be the end of it. I think the story, characters, and enemies evolved once they realised that they had to make more. Most of the rest of the series was defined by Super Metroid, so I don't think we can really look at the series from the first game, because there is not enough development to make any solid conclusions.
HistoryEater - February 6, 2009 06:43 PM (GMT)
wow....that is history. i must eat it!
*chomps upon intracite history of space pirates*
mm....
kenji imatake - February 7, 2009 06:36 AM (GMT)
my history teacher can't teach me history now that history eater ate history, yay!
yes, here is how ridley appeared:

and a better image of the metroid...

and now they look and act totally different than how they were in the original.
Adorios The Metalloid Assasin - February 7, 2009 04:28 PM (GMT)
i still think that the old metroid (creature) made more sense than the new metroids.
fly_boy42 - February 7, 2009 07:22 PM (GMT)
And were more likely to appear in doujinshi raping a certain someone.
No thank you.
DarkSamus - February 8, 2009 04:10 AM (GMT)

Kuro-chan - February 8, 2009 02:40 PM (GMT)
